Field with Pumpkins

A few of the pumpkins that look untouched
are in fact the most crushed when seen
from the front; others, lying on their sides in the mud,
are worth lifting into my arms and hauling home,
two small and white, three streaked green.
Night drops down on a field of softly-dented lanterns
that seem, just in this last light,
to glow.
